Introducing Equifax Scam Exchange
It’s a frustrating loop that risk and security teams know all too well. Even with robust verification protocols in place, scammers still find ways to exploit hidden blind spots - using tools like deepfakes, AI replication or synthetic profiles to bypass fraud defences.
When they succeed, financial institutions are frequently left holding the liability for reimbursed funds, all while trying to handle case investigations and maintain customer trust.
The challenge isn't your commitment to security; it's the limits of looking at data in isolation. Scammers don't operate in silos, yet fraud risk is still frequently assessed using only internal ecosystem data.
That's why we are introducing the Equifax Scam Exchange. Currently entering private preview, this collaborative platform brings an innovative approach to fraud prevention, using information from a large array of data sources to proactively flag high-risk transactions.
An additional layer for your existing defence
The Scam Exchange isn't designed to replace your current fraud prevention processes. Instead, it acts as an additional, intelligent layer of security built directly into your existing system to alert you to scams.
The platform operates on an innovative two-part functionality. First, it runs a traditional, structured check, matching specific attributes like phone or account numbers against established fraud databases. The second part leverages advanced AI models to scan the messy, unstructured data footprints that traditional systems often miss - such as semantic patterns, wording, and simulated urgency.
By combining these two approaches, the system generates a real-time Scam Score that aims to protect your customers at every touchpoint. Whether that means empowering telcos and social media networks to filter out manipulative messages before their users can be deceived, or allowing financial institutions to pause a suspicious payment or prompt a secondary check before money leaves the account. It can help stop the loss before it occurs, potentially sparing your business the financial hit and your customer the distress.
Why a collective ecosystem works better
A single financial institution can only see what happens within its own walls. But fraudsters constantly hop across boundaries - using telco networks, social media, and multiple banks to stitch together their schemes. Analysing your own data in a silo simply can't capture the full picture.
The Scam Exchange aims to address this by driving an industry-wide, collaborative approach. It aggregates real-time contributions from telecommunications companies, digital platforms, banks, and the National Anti-Scam Centre.
- Ecosystem-wide view: Designed to help close the circular loop between identity verification, fraud detection, and active scams.
- Scalable security: Provides a shared defence layer that grows sharper and more accurate as more participants contribute data.
As a global leader in data intelligence, Equifax is well-positioned to aggregate information from these trusted industries. We match and cross-reference large datasets across different sectors - a complex task for individual firms to perform alone.
Cutting through the noise with AI
Unstructured behavioural data is naturally noisy and notoriously difficult to analyse. Traditional rule-based systems struggle to make sense of it because they require strict, defined fields.
Our AI models change that by effectively separating valid signals from the noise. Rather than sticking to rigid, static rules, the platform enables dynamic risk assessments. This means the AI looks at the actual context and intent behind an interaction, adapting its analysis based on relevant demographic or contextual parameters.
We are already training these models on vast public and research scam datasets. As the ecosystem expands, your shared insights are expected to continuously fine-tune the system, making pattern detection increasingly precise over time.
